Baffin Island

arcticWith a landmass one and a half times the size of Germany, the Canadian owned Baffin Island is one of the most sparsely populated areas in the world. Most of the island sits above the artic circle creating a treeless and barren world. The vast, unspoilt tundra, the mountainous interior and the hundreds of bays and fjords of the rugged northern coast make the huge 476,070 sq km island a perfect destination for adventure seekers and climbers. With fewer than 30,000 people - mostly small Inuit groups - scattered across the island this place is still one of the last great unexplored regions on earth.

Auyuittuq National Park Reserve, or "the land that never melts," was established as the first national park north of the Arctic Circle in 1975. It sprawls across 21,500 square kilometres of the Cumberland Sound Peninsula and is made up of scenic mountain valleys, fjords, and glaciers. Many visitors to the park come to hike Akshayuk Pass between the communities of Pangnirtung and Broughton Island. The 10-12 day hike will take you 500 metres above sea level before you begin your descent, but in places mountains will soar a kilometre or more above you. Outside the pass, meltwater from the Penny Icecap feeds Summit Lake, appropriately named for its location at the apex of the trail. Climbers may be enticed by the face of Mt. Thor, the world’s longest uninterrupted cliff, or by the thousand year old ice of the glaciers.

Testimonial from Richard Dunwoody

"In my experience there is little that is more rewarding than travelling, self supported, in the Arctic. Before the Polar Race I was given training by Richard Bull - now a director of Arctic Expeditions. Proper training is essential and I have since also safely completed an expedition across the striking Baffin Island now an Arctic National Park.I would highly recommend a Baffin Island Expedition and the Arctic training I was provided"
